Encouragement

encouragement 2

For I long to see you, that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you— that is, that we may be mutually encouraged by each other’s faith, both yours and mine.” Romans 1:12

I was encouraged by a post from Allistair Begg today, which is actually a re-written devotional from Spurgeon.

The idea of the message was an alert to the danger of living at ease – the subtle allure of prosperity that lulls us into a slumber-like complacency (my words, not his), that rather than bemoaning our times of adversity, we should rather praise God for them, considering the good that God works in us through them.

As I consider the theme today of encouragement, in light of Rom 1:12, I believe that we are encouraged when we see one another facing trials, adversities and affliction, and by the grace of God remaining true to Him – and joyful in the midst of it all; considering that, “the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the glory that will be revealed in us.”

It is by our dependency on Him that His light shines through, His strength being more clearly seen through our weakness; so that even in our weakness we are able to strengthen one another with the strength we have received from Him.

We carry this treasure in earthen vessels, that the surpassing greatness of the power may be seen to be of God, and not of ourselves.”

Lord, help us today to encourage each other as You have encouraged us by Your Spirit.

Amen.
